I thought I'd share some places I know that use WoW and gaming for inspiration.
VIDEO
The Guild (http://www.youtube.com/user/watchtheguild)
Originally written as a TV pilot, it was reformatted for the web by the lead actress/writer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1260407/), who has many professional credits under her belt including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Monk". The characters are very broad caricatures that tends to paint gamers as inept losers, and the gaming references are intentionally overgeneralized to avoid copyright issues, but I've found some humor in it. There are 10 episodes so far with a second season soon to film.
Pure Pwnage (http://www.purepwnage.com/index.php)
From Canada, the story started as a faux-documentary look at the life of strategy-gamer "The Pwnerer", but has since grown into a large story with its own world. The girlfriend plays WoW and there's a few sequences that take place in the game, but also covers most genres. Originating in Canada the screenings for the episodes that happen before they hit the web end up packing the movie theaters they book.
The Gamers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTEHqAeanw)
You can see the whole movie on YouTube, but I originally came across this as a DVD in a local game store. The humor is more pen and paper RPG related and shifts from the real world to the game world, showcasing how game mechanics sometimes hinder the telling of a story. Some cool stuff in here, and I was fortunate enough to meet the company (http://www.deadgentlemen.com/) at a convention and found them all to be very cool people who just wanted to make these geeky little movies.
COMICS
Ding! (http://www.crispygamer.com/comics/ding/page0001.aspx)
By the same guy that makes PVP (http://www.pvponline.com/), one of the top webcomics. This comic has very WoW-based humor and some dead-on stuff. Highly recommended.
Looking For Group (http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/1)
I have only glanced at a few of these strips but I plan to look at more. Some good artwork here.
Goblins (http://goblinscomic.com/d/20050626.html)
What if those low-level NPC peons you slaughtered when you were just starting out got it in their heads to start adventuring and leveling up themselves? So goes the premise of this comic. The humor is more pen-and-paper based but the artwork is top-notch, highly-influenced by Vaughn Bode and gets better as it goes on, moving from black and white to color.
So there's my start. If anyone has any other links, feel free to keep this thread going.
