We've all run instances that were long and difficult. If you're in the right group, these times build up a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie; the feeling of having survived an ordeal that could not have been accomplished alone. It's really at the core of why we play MMOs.
But is it possible to set a task too high? There have been postings on the net (http://petfoodalpha.com/?p=1055) recalling a boss fight in Final Fantasy XI (http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml) that a guild had taken on, and given up on.
After eighteen hours.
The guild stated that they may have been able to defeat the boss with five or six more hours of action, but that people were actually getting physically ill and passing out from the fight.
It brings to mind the old Rita Rudner joke:
One of my friends told me she was in labor for 36 hours. I don't even want to do anything that feels GOOD for 36 hours.
